At the recent conference of the Canadian Bar Association, an announcement was made by a representative of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) that the department is looking forward to have one more round of invitation to accept applications from people who want to sponsor their grandparents and parents to settle permanently in Canada.
The representative was referring to the Parent and Grandparent Program (PGP). In case IRCC plans to carry out one more draw, it is expected to happen in the coming months.
In January 2017, a new approach was implemented by IRCC to receive applications from permanent residents and Canadian citizens who want to sponsor their grandparents and parents to settle permanently in Canada.
A form for Interest to Sponsor was introduced through which individuals can show their interest for sponsoring their grandparents and parents. The authority will select these applications on a random basis.
Individuals who had submitted their online application between January 3rd and February 2nd were included in a pool of candidates. IRCC made the announcement that on April 25th, 10,000 applications were randomly selected from the created pool which contained nearly 95,000 applications.
The selected candidates were invited to submit their application for sponsorship. The selected candidates had to submit a complete application form within 90 days from the receipt of the invitation.
It has been disclosed by the IRCC that only 700 applications have been received from individuals who were invited for sponsorship, moreover, 15% of them were incomplete.
An IRCC spokesperson has stated that in case 10,000 new applications are not received by the department within the set time frame, than more people will be invited to apply. In case completed applications are not received the department will go back and make selection from the existing list.
Before 2017, paper based application used to be received for PGP and they were processed on first-come, first serve basis. Some stakeholders pointed to IRCC about the fairness of this system. It was noticed that some people spend extra amount of money on courier service to get their application as early as possible
