Top 5 Tips To Nail Your IELTS Test

Top 5 Tips to Nail your IELTS Test

Those who’re wishing to study abroad or planning to migrate to English-speaking countries will be required to take an IELTS test. IELTS stands for International English Language Testing System), which is designed to assess your English language skills based on four key aspects of a language: Speaking, Writing, Reading and Listening. The test has four components that are further divided into different parts and tasks.

In most instances, the IELTS test can be overwhelming at first; however, with enough practice and preparation, it’s possible to get the band score you’re aiming for!

Here are five tried-and-tested tips for that can help you ace your upcoming IELTS test.

  1. Study The Practice Material

Completing sample test materials is very helpful in preparing for your test. These will not only help you familiarize yourself with the format of the test but also learn to pace yourself with time limits. Doing regular practice will help you to simulate the time constraints and identify your strengths and weaknesses. This will also give you an idea on which module you are particularly weak in and need more focus.

  1. Read The Instructions Carefully

An important IELTS tip is to always read the instructions carefully. For instance, if in the listening test you are asked to complete a sentence using NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS, and the correct answer is ‘leather jacket’, the answer ‘jacket made of leather’ would be incorrect. Moreover, in the writing test, pay close attention to the minimum number of words required for each task. You will lose marks if you do not write the minimum number of words (for example 150 words for Task 1).

  1. Have A Good Ear For Accents

Make yourself familiarize with different accents. A range of native-speaker accents (North American, British, Australian, and New Zealand etc.) is used in the IELTS listening test, therefore, it’s a huge advantage if you are able to understand all of them. Train your ears by listening to English podcasts, radio and TV news channels.

  1. Develop A Strategy

With proper knowledge of each module and its parts, you can develop time-saving methods and techniques to answer each question more efficiently. There are some methods that might work for you but not for others; therefore, what’s most important is to know which strategy suits you the best.

  1. Read a diverse range of articles

Another way to improve your language skills is to expose yourself with a wide range of texts and topics. Read up on general topics such as news, current affairs, climate change, science, animals, economics, history, sociology, or anything under the sun! The more you read the more familiar you will become with new vocabulary and sentence structure.
