On January 28, 2002 Immigration &
Nationality Directorate launched Highly Skilled Migrant Programme (HSMP)
as a new initiative to allow individuals with exceptional personal
skills and experience to come to UK for seeking work and
self-employment. The program aims to provide individual migration
route for highly skilled persons, who also have the required
experience to compete in the global economic scene.
The Highly Skilled Migrant Programme (HSMP) has been replaced by
Tier 1 (General) of the UK's new points based system. Tier 1
(General) uses very similar criteria to the HSMP. As part of the
UK's five-tier points based immigration system, Tier 1 (General)
allows highly skilled individuals who score the requisite points to
immigrate to the UK without any kind of sponsorship from an
employer.
