However, having their skills assessed in the nominated occupation by a relevant assessing authority, is one of the key elements for skilled professionals who are interested in migrating to Australia under General Skilled Migration Visa category.
Your skills might need to be assessed by the relevant assessing authority for the occupation you nominate when you apply for:
- 186 – Employer Nomination Scheme

An assessing authority is an organisation that checks applicants meet the standards they set. The standards include university or trade qualifications for applicant’s occupation. However, assessing authorities cannot offer migration advice or any updates regarding applicant’s visa application.
There are five major assessing authorities in Australia where most of the applicants can qualify to obtain positive skills assessment.
- Engineers Australia: For all engineers and engineering managers except computer engineers
- The Australian Computer Society (ACS): For computer professionals
- VETASSESS: For general occupations
- CPP – CPAA, IPA: For Account professional
- TRA: For trade occupations
A positive valid assessment of both qualifications and employment is required for a successful skills assessment for migration purposes.
Assessments are valid until whichever comes first:
- 3 years from their issue date unless a shorter period is listed on the assessment
- the expiry date on the assessment
