Parents And Grandparents Sponsorship

Canada’s Parents and Grandparents Program opens and closes within minutes

Canada’s Parents and Grandparents sponsorship program (PGP) that allows eligible Canadian citizens and permanent residents over the 18 years of age to sponsor their parents and grandparents for immigration to Canada; closed to expressions of interest from eligible sponsors after opening briefly on January 28th.

The Interest to Sponsor form was available for just 11 minutes, before IRCC announced that applications received have met the annual limit.

Even though around 27,000 online interest to sponsor forms were accepted through the IRCC website, a lot of people were not happy about the process. From 27,000 interest to sponsor forms accepted, 20,000 of them will be accepted, which is 4 times the number of applications accepted in 2015.

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) tweeted that those who successfully submitted the Interest to Sponsor form will receive an email within 24 hours confirming receipt.

IRCC said following the elimination of duplicate submissions, invitations to apply to the Parents and Grandparents sponsorship program (PGP) will be issued on a first-in, first-served basis until it reaches its 2019 target of 20,000 complete applications.

Interested sponsors who receive an invitation will need to submit a complete application and all the necessary documents within 60 days of receiving the invitation.

At present, the processing time for complete applications that are submitted on time is around 20 to 24 months.

Those applicants who have submitted an Interest to Sponsor form and receive a confirmation but do not receive an invitation this year, IRCC says it will hold on to their forms and contact information for consideration in 2020.
